8 Simple Things You Can Do Today To Improve Website Security

Sometimes, the simplest methods to tackle any issues tend to be the best ones. When it comes to website security, you will come across a variety of confusing and complex concepts and solutions if you dig deep into it.

8 Best Practices Improve the Website Security

Up-To-Date Software

You need to make sure that all the scripts and platforms are always kept up to date. Popular web software is always aggressively targeted by hackers. You need to make sure that all the programs are constantly updated with security patches to prevent potential hackers from gaining control of your website. So, make sure every single software product you use is kept up-to-date.

Strong Password

Brute force attacks with the help of sophisticated software are employed by hackers for cracking passwords. To keep hackers away, it is recommended to keep complex passwords that utilize special characters, numerals, lowercase letters, and uppercase letters. Your password should be at least eight characters long.

Login Pages Encryption

Your login pages should use SSL encryption. This allows secure transmission of any information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers as well as login credentials. This encrypted information is meaningless to a third party even if it is intercepted.

Secure Web Host

It is important for you to make sure that your web host is aware of the growing threats by hackers and they should take steps to keep your website secure. The web host should also offer regular backup of your data to a remote server. The restoration from that backup should also be easy in case your website gets hacked.

Clean Website

Keep in mind that every single piece of software such as a plug-in, an application or a database is a potential entry point for hackers. You should not keep any application, database or files on your website if you do not require them. Change the file structure, if necessary, to make it simple which allows you to keep track of changes in order to regularly delete old files.

Data Backup

All your website files should be backed up in case you lose your original data or you are unable to access your website. You should always choose a web host that offers regular backups of your website but it’s also important for you to have your own backup. Some of the popular content management systems come with extensions or plug-ins that allow you to automatically backup your site at scheduled intervals. You can also manually back up your databases and content.

Check for Vulnerabilities

Your website should be scanned regularly, especially after any addition or changes made to the web components. There are many free tools online that give an idea of the overall security of your website. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to get an idea of all the potential security flaws in your website with these tools. Therefore, it is important to hire the services of a professional for an in-depth review of your website security. They should also give you an explanation of the potential vulnerabilities.

Security Expert

You should be able to take care of small things on your own but an expert may be needed for some of the more complex security measures. Companies offering security services can help you keep your website secure by regularly scanning your website, monitoring your website for any malicious activity, performing full security audits of your website, and they will also be of great help in case you need to repair your website.
